broadband advice
|
my sky broadband deal is coming to an end, want to leave as its been rubbish even though I get speed upto 40 (whatever that means), I don't even get full bars on my phone in the same room, not massively on the net and don't want to pay too much, got a letter through earlier this month to go vodafone, superfast 2 for £20.95 a month, sounds perfect but just wanted to know if anyone has got them and if the signal is strong round the house. Of course i've tried to look up reviews but thought i'd see if anyone has any first hand experience, cheers.

In your case the fibre will run to the cabinet, and then copper to your house. So the nearer you are to the cabinet the better.
In my old house I was pretty far from the cabinet so got 27mb, in my new house it was right outside and I got something like 68mb.
Have switched to a Virgin Media Business Lomé now and get 350mb!

I didn't know BT own Talk Talk they let them run the business separate from BT.

Just put your requirements in and see what comes up.
I got a great deal with Virgin with it.

Talk Talk has been very good for the 4 years iv'e used them. Only complaint i have with their CS is,despite their people speaking Excellent English the thick Indian accents make it difficult to understand them. Not critisising them, they have provided an excellent service and at a reasonable price.

Thanks for all the replies,
Spandex Sidney 3:20 Wed Feb 26 Is your coverage around the house any good? As I said in the opening post with sky i'm not even getting a strong signal in the same room, so if you get good coverage then i'm sold, and yeah I have vodafone mobile and i'll get a discount with both mobile and broadband.

I’ve not needed their customer service. Not had any issues in the 5 months I’ve been with them. Had them about 14 years ago and they were shit but so far superb.

Open reach ( BT ) have a programme to install fibre to the cabinet nationally. It is being rolled out in each area such that their cabinets furthest from the exchange are being cabled to first. This is because the copper connexion speeds farthest from the exchange are extremely slow compared to those nearby the exchange.

So it's not to the exchange for any case then only the distance to the cabinet ie the copper bit - Yes/No
I'm on copper all the way to the exchange, no fibre where I live

Don Rav.
We rented a place from a professor we knew a few years ago during a sabbatical and he had Talktalk
I would never used them after that. Semi-regular outages and slow speed to non-existent speed in evenings.
Maybe things have changed and maybe where we were or something but just my experience.

When you're talking about wifi signal round the house it's not only about your internet provider and the router they give you, but could be effected by interference from other devices in your house, or from your neighbours, so you might end up with the same problems with a different provider.
Might be worth testing first before moving supplier. Try changing the channel on your router at least. This can help if you have neighbours all hogging the same wifi channel.

Depends - if it's FTTP (Fibre To The Premises - so Virgin, a very small subset of BT) then no, but if it's FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet - most BT, everyone else) then massively yes

"Your speed depends on how far away from the exchange"
Is that true for fibre?
For fibre, it depends on how far away from the Green Cabinet (unless fibre direct to the property)

I have Vodafone home broadband and it's great, I pay about that. You get a discount if you have your mobile with them.
Only needed to call them once and that was about my mobile so can't comment on the service. But the fact I haven't had to says something. Been with them for about 2 years now for home BB, they offered me an incentive to renew at the same price.

Ritchie,
Your phone with Sky too? otherwise not getting full bars on your phone is nothing to do with your broadband or are you referring to the wifi bars? download speedtest.net, it will tell you how fast your download and upload speeds are; depending on where you live if the download speed is below 11 mbps then call Sky (provided you have their fibre package) complain tell them you are coming to the end of your contract and you'll see £40 drop to around £25. Do some googling to find out what speeds you are meant to be getting in your area. Your speed depends on how far away from the exchange you which is why all the broadband companies will tell you that the speeds are UP TO xx mbps (MegaBytes Per Second).
HTH.
